Buying an E-Bike: New vs. Used

Used E-Bikes and E-Scooters are abundantly available on classified sites and through private sales, and many people are purchasing second hand. It is definitely possible to acquire a used but still serviceable E-Bike, however there are certain things that should be kept in mind when shopping used.
New vs. Used E-bikes
Generally, E-Bikes do not require much maintenance, but it is a good idea to thoroughly check over any used bike that you may be considering buying, this will ensure that there are no major concerns which could be costly. If possible, it is also a good idea to take the bike on a test ride to ensure that it has adequate power and that all electrical systems are in working order.
The battery charger should also be determined to be in good working order, as replacing them can cost between $80.00-$215.00.

The most important component to check on a used bike is the batteries. The batteries should have a date stamp on them. If they are 2 years old or more, you very likely have to replace them right away. If they have been improperly maintained, you will also probably have to replace the batteries as improper maintenance will damage the batteries. Determining if the batteries have been properly maintained can be difficult when purchasing a used bike.
Batteries that are warped, expanded, or deformed have most likely been damaged due to over-charging, extreme temperatures, or other improper battery maintenance procedures that have been employed.

Keep in mind that the cost of replacement batteries is anywhere from $340.00 to $560.00, plus taxes and installation fee.
So for example, if you are looking to purchase a used 48V bike at a cost of $800.00 and it requires new batteries and a new charger, you are actually going to be paying an additional $418.10 to have the batteries replaced, and $80.00 for a new charger, which is a total of $1298.10 for a used bike. Considering the fact that our top selling EMMO Hornet retails taxes included for only $1604.60 brand new, and also includes an industry leading warranty. Buying new may be the best choice.
